Press Kit
Use the Press Kit’s six examples to reach local and
state editors and reporters to generate publicity about Building
a Presence activities and participants in your state. These templates
offer ideas about news releases and media advisories. You may copy
them into a word processing document and fill in the blanks, or
you can take relevant sections from them. News releases are generally
sent to print media outlets, such as newspapers and state education
bulletins and journals, one to two weeks before an event. Media
advisories are used a few days before the day of an event and are
sent to all media, including newspapers and television, radio, and
cable stations.
Here are two samples from a Media Day in Texas—a news release and
a media advisory—both of which were successfully used to generate
widespread publicity:

How to cut and paste text from the template and sample pages
- Open your word processing program while viewing the web page.
- Highlight the text you want to copy.
- On your browser menu, select Edit and then Copy.
- Switch to your word processor window.
- Place the cursor where you want to insert text.
- On your word processor menu, select Edit and then Paste.
