ENERGY
Energy. It cooks
our food, heats our homes, lights our streets, and powers our automobiles.
It also promises to be one of the most complex and challenging issues
of the 21st centurycrucial to both our nation's and
our planet's prosperity. That said, this issue of Science Class
will help you tackle key energy-related questions with your students.
These questions include: What is energy? How is it harnessed for
domestic and commercial use? What are the costs (e.g., environmental)
of various energy production methods, and what strategies exist
for producing and consuming energy more efficiently?
These are tough
questions, but questions worthy of classroom inquiry at all grade
levels. We hope the resources provided below help you bring this
important topic to life for your students.
Energy
in the News
(Article
summaries provided by the NSTA
Web News Department)
Three recent
news articles explore promising sources of “clean” energy: wind,
hydrogen, and believe it or not, bacteria from the ocean floor.
You may want to use these articles to discuss with students the
growing demand for alternative energy supplies, as well as the feasibility
of such approaches.
Energy
on the Net
SciLinks
is an innovative new initiative that brings the pages of science
textbooks to life by linking them to the vast resources of the Internet.
To learn more about SciLinks, take
a tour today. These grade-appropriate links will help you use
the Internet as you discuss Energy with your students.

Professional
Development
Why is Professional
Development important? Research has shown that the single most important
factor in student achievement is a qualified teacher with extensive
content knowledge and a solid understanding of how students learn.
According to
the American Educational Research Association, the six aspects of
science teachers' professional development that emerged as extremely
important in affecting teacher learning are: form, duration, collective
participation, content, active learning, and coherence.
