Science and Other Disciplines
As teachers of science, you probably don’t
need any convincing that science is a fascinating and important discipline
in and of itself. But increasingly, educators are recognizing that science
is a wonderful vehicle through which other subjects can be taught,
including reading, writing, literature, math, history, social studies, and
art. And in this era of high-stakes testing, combining science with other
disciplines (particularly reading and math) is also a great way to ensure
that science doesn’t get squeezed out of the curriculum.
As you
get ready to start the new school year, this issue of Science Class
features a range of educational resources that you can use to make
interdisciplinary connections in your classroom.
Interdisciplinary
Connections in the News
Article summaries provided by the NSTA
WebNews Service.
If you’re a news buff, you know that a natural
interdisciplinary connection is science and social studies, because good
scientific information is often needed to make informed public policy
decisions. The three news stories highlighted in this issue illustrate how
a strong grasp of science is crucial to formulating sound policies in the
following areas: determining animal rights; protecting the nation against a
smallpox attack; and figuring out what to do with nuclear waste.

Interdisciplinary
Connections on the Net
SciLinks is an interactive, Web-based
service from NSTA that connects your lesson and/or course materials (books
and journal articles) with online content chosen just for your selected
topics. Members can search by keyword or phrase and receive a list of
teacher-approved Internet resources.
Science teachers are always looking for ways
to incorporate reading into their lesson plans. These SciLinks provide
scientist biographies to make the interdisciplinary link a natural one.
