Welcome to Science Class, NSTA's

Science and Other Disciplines
As teachers of science, you probably don’t
need any convincing that science is a fascinating and important discipline
in and of itself. But increasingly, educators are recognizing that science
is a wonderful vehicle through which other subjects can be taught,
including reading, writing, literature, math, history, social studies, and
art. And in this era of high-stakes testing, combining science with other
disciplines (particularly reading and math) is also a great way to ensure
that science doesn’t get squeezed out of the curriculum.
As you
get ready to start the new school year, this issue of Science Class
features a range of educational resources that you can use to make
interdisciplinary connections in your classroom.

If you’re a news buff, you know that a natural
interdisciplinary connection is science and social studies, because good
scientific information is often needed to make informed public policy
decisions. The three news stories highlighted in this issue illustrate how
